Yesterday i just have a very interesting chat with Fiona.
We were talking about studies in the future.
She said that Cambridge does not like Chinese(or sth like that. as u noe, my english is bad). Well, i agree alot. Today's news article talk about a famous biologist in Singapore. She commented that the Chinese standard in Singapore is dropping drastically.
Actually, its easy to understand. Walk along the streets on Orchard road, do a survey on the teenagers there, and i can tell you most of them do not like Chinese. I know a few people who idolise Mandarin pop singers, yet they do not even understand what they are singing. I remember a person asking me to help her changing the lyrics of a song into hanyu pinyin. And i know a PR from China whose Chinese is worse than me.
Thanks to the large exposure to the Western culture, Chinese is much dying out in Singapore.
But i never regret loving Chinese, though there is a disclaimer i must make. I like Chinese, but im proud to be a Singaporean. Dont put me together with citizens from China. There is a reason why im proud to be in NPCC.
But there is not much jobs available for people like me who likes Chinese. The most obvious is to work in the news department, like Mediacorp. Having went for an attachment to Mediacorp, its rather fun there. Or to be a Chinese teacher. But recent news about mistreatment of teachers turn many potential teachers off. Songwriter? You must be very good to survive in the entertainment market. (my MI shows that i gt talent in music). I dont think being an author will attract any attention in Singapore, esp the teenagers. Even Im rather deterred by too boring Chinese texts.
One thing to note: If you want to major Chinese in Singapore, you will have to compete with many talents from China. They have the foundation. Headstart. Its a tough race against them, to say the truth.
So...wait and see.=================================
